BIENAL BRASILEIRA DE DESIGN E INOVAÇÃO

This exhibit will take place from November 2005 through January 2006 in São Paulo. Innovation will be its central underlying theme. The exhibition aims to display, periodically, the most recent trends in design in Brazil, highlighting key actions being carried out and their respective results in the most diverse fields in which design is used. These applications include the development of products, whether manufactured or not in mass scale, the creation of systems of visual messages, management solutions, and/or academic experiments, just to mention a few.

The concept of design that is most commonly presented by the media nowadays reduces it to an appealing, perhaps somewhat exotic or even extravagant outer appearance of products and brands. This concept entails a sort of “aesthetic frivolity” as José Mindlin maintains. The very purpose of this creative activity is actually – according to the definition coined by ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design),  “to establish the multi-faceted qualities of objects, processes, services and their systems in whole life-cycles”. However, as such – according to the same definition – “design is the central factor of innovative humanization of technologies and the crucial factor of cultural and economic exchange”. Therefore, whatever form design confers to objects and messages does not represent an end in itself, albeit resulting from a creative process and from choices within a given project.

Design’s ultimate purpose is related to the creation of innovative solutions that contribute to the well-being of people and to improved human relations. The Biennial Exhibition aims to incite a movement towards the construction of the future, based on a rereading of our past, through the eyes of design, and also a reconstruction of the present moment where we stand, ten years after the Programa Brasileiro de Design- PBD was launched.
