CONCURSO DESIGN DE CARÁTER SOCIAL

The PBD, in an attempt to become more aligned with Brazilian government policies, promotes the Concurso Design de Caráter Social. This initiative aims to establish an alliance between the needs of different segments of society and a growing socio-environmental awareness, with techniques and technology making positive contributions to new business ventures.

This project will help make design more well-known while fomenting its use as a tool for promoting social inclusion as well as respect for citizenship and, finally, by supporting a greater use of design in teaching and research. Moreover, it will foster socio-environmental awareness by investing in the social functions of design, boosting the industry of recycling and tourism, and encouraging citizens to re-use discarded material. The project will also foster the start-up of small businesses / entrepreneurs, and a closer cooperation among the public sector, the academic milieu, social organizations and local institutes of technology, with the aim of promoting design. The project will also prize environmental quality and benefit populations that currently do not have access to products with good design developed and produced to be adequately used in their professional duties and/or during their leisure time.

Products with a good design will become popular and society as a whole will begin to realize the importance of design in raising the population’s standards of living. This will pave the way for a reflection upon the social role of design in Brazilian society, particularly in the professional community of designers as well as in the academic milieu. Since prized products will be used by low-income sectors of the society – collectors of recyclable materials, city halls, sites with historical and touristic importance, among others – these actions will truly help design become more popular and will lead to more interaction between design and the general public, therefore promoting social inclusion.
