OUR MISSION
Our Mission is to lead Brazilian industry to more updated industrial and technological standards through design, aiming to contribute towards higher standards of quality and competitivity in the goods produced and services rendered in Brazil as well as making them more well known.
The Programa Brasileiro de Design- PBD (the Brazilian Program of Design) aims to promote growth in the realm of “Brazilian” design, by tapping from one of the country’s unique features, i.e., that of being a creative country which holds a strong sense of identity, fully capable of leading the Marca Brasil (“Brazil’s Brand”) to develop on the competitive global market.
The PBD has stemmed from the catalyzing effect and interaction among subprograms with both broad and specific scopes, thus promoting one single strategic direction while maintaining a decentralized perspective. The program seeks to motivate businessmen to focus on its major objective, i.e., that of enabling design to play a more central role within the productive system.
Design is a key competitive factor in the business world, especially in the segments subject to international competition. It gives companies a strategic competitive edge, seeing as it makes it possible for them to reach greater optimization in the use of raw materials and higher quality standards in the many phases of both projects and production processes, therefore ensuring higher levels of customer satisfaction.
Design is the differential that yields greater added value to export products, making it possible for companies to supply differentiated and innovative products. It thus plays a key role in the process of creating and strengthening a sense of identity and a positive image that adds value to Brazilian products.
Countries as well as their companies have introduced adjustment strategies during the past few years, as a result of a process of accelerated technological innovation in the context of the unprecedented circumstances of globalization and world economic dynamics. These recently launched strategies aim at increasing competitivity and at stirring up competition.
An analysis of governmental plans points to a scenario in which greater emphasis is being placed on C&T&I (Science, Technology and Innovation) as a strategic factor for boosting competitivity of goods produced and services rendered in Brazil, a fundamental ingredient for adding greater value to both production and exports.
Design is a tool that leads to innovation in the productive cycle of any given product, for it introduces new shapes, new materials and new conceptual values that will come to define the development of new productive and technological processes for the production of new products.
“ Even the most radical invention must be made tangible in a usable form through the process of design.” Helena Lastres
Design has become an issue inserted in Brazil’s government policies since 1995, being included in the Industrial, Technological and Foreign Trade National Policy, in compliance with the premise of restructuring and of increasing the competitivity of the Brazilian industrial system, as well as the modernization of its productive processes. To reach these aims, the PBD was established through a decree dating from November 9th, 1995.
According to Brazil’s current Industrial, Technological and Foreign Trade National Policy, launched by the MDIC (Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry and International Commerce) on March 31st, 2004, design has become an intrinsic part of the general guidelines regarding Innovation and Technological Development – Product, Process and Management Innovation, as well as of the Programa Imagem do Brasil no Exterior (the Program “Brazil’s Image Abroad”) thereby consolidating PBD’s objectives, which have also been consistent with the Fóruns de Competitividade das Cadeias Produtivas (Forums of Competitivity within Production Chains). The main aim of all these efforts is to obtain greater recognition of Brazilian products, thanks to their enhanced design and quality and competitive prices.
