The Programa Brasileiro de Design (Brazilian Program of Design), here coined as the PBD -- created in 1995 by the decree dated from November 9th, 1995 – through its Executive Committee -- used to select, at the first meeting of each year, up until 1999, projects that would be prioritized given their macro-strategic nature. These projects were chosen among the projects and action plans submitted by the representatives of the General Subprograms. Representatives from the Sectorial Programs within the Brazilian Industry, including the Wood and Furniture, Leather and Footwear, Textile and Clothing and Gems and Jewels industries, etc., were also entitled to submit their sectorial projects to the Executive Committee, which would study their potential and subsequently set up partnerships to make these projects feasible. When the Fóruns de Competitividade das Cadeias Produtivas were institutionalized by Brazil’s MDIC, the PBD began to develop both projects and action plans that were aligned to these Forums.
In October 2002, the PBD set up an important meeting in Brasília in which strategies were reassessed. All together 37 institutions representing the entire Brazilian community of design took part in this encounter. As a result, the strategic guidelines for the years to come were drawn up. These guidelines made up what was called “Caminhos do Design” (“The Paths of Design”).
