The Gráfica magazine is one of the most important publications in graphic design in Brazil. | Its origins are in the insert “O Raposa”, which was produced by Miran (in charge of art, texts and photolithograph direction) and was included weekly in the now extinct Diário do Paraná. The newspaper insert lasted from 1976 to 1978, and after that, it would be published by the Fundação Cultural de Curitiba (‘The Cultural Foundation of Curitiba’).
With this work Miran would receive several international awards and would be recognized worldwide, coming into contact with internationally renowned designers. The exhibition of 1982, held in Curitiba, was a tremendous success because of these contacts. There were a lot of works in the graphic area from many different countries. The catalog of this exhibition would become the first issue of the Gráfica magazine.
Miran paid out of his own pocket to have the magazine published between 1983 and 1987. He published 17 issues during this period, which always maintained an impeccable production, despite the magazine’s irregular periodicity. With this publication, he earned international prestige. In the magazine’s pages, professional works linked to graphic arts were presented that were executed in Brazil and abroad.
In 1987, Miran formed a partnership with Carlos Ferreira and Orestes Woestehof, who were responsible for the commercial and administrative areas of the publishing house. In addition, he found some investors, which made it possible to increase the number of pages in the magazine. Printing the magazine at the Burti printing house, and later, at the Palloti printing house improved its quality in terms of printing and finishing.
The magazine became an important channel of exchange between the works executed in Brazil and those carried out abroad. It mixed the presentation of new talents with that of those who were already famous. In 1990, the Swiss publishing house Rotovision began to distribute the magazine in Europe.
In 1995, the partners left the magazine, and Oswaldo Miranda went back to publishing the magazine alone, with smaller editions, but always faithful to its sophisticated level of quality.
