The company

This small company located in Campina Grande, Paraíba has 8 employees working towards creating innovation in the Brazilian furniture market.  Its focus is incorporating design and the Brazilian identity in products such as benches, armchairs, carpets, bookcases, dining room tables and lighting fixtures. The company, which was founded in 2007, has reached an annual profit of BRL 120,000. Its products include distinctive hand woven nylon cords which have become well known in the market.

The idea

The main inspiration for this project was a small, oblong fruit that reveals a star shape when sliced transversally, is native to India and Indonesia, and is grown in Brazil: the carambola (star fruit). Sérgio J. Matos came up with the idea for the ottoman after studying the fruit’s shape and design.

The Carambola ottoman was seen as unusual in the furniture market and it encountered a number of manufacturing issues since the city’s industrial technology did not have the equipment necessary for fabricating the seat. The company’s solution was to use artisanal techniques as the main production method.
